Vaughan family issues public appeal to help 8-month-old girl get liver transplant

A father from Vaughan is counting on the kindness of strangers to help his eight-month-old daughter.

Delfina Budziak, who has congenital liver disease, was admitted to the Hospital for Sick Children four weeks ago after suffering cholangitis — liver infection — the day after her baptism in April.

Her father, Peter, said she won’t be able to go home until she gets a new liver, adding it’s heartbreaking.

“It keeps getting worse for her, she constantly has an infection in her liver, so she’s constantly on medication going through a PIC line IV,” Peter said.

Delfina was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia when she was two months old. Since then, has suffered several bouts of liver infection.

She said despite her serious illness, Delfina is still a happy little girl.

“It’s honestly amazing what she can go through and still the spirit she can be in. It’s inspiring.”

After seeing the response to the appeal from Ottawa Senators’ owner Eugene Melnyk, Delfina’s family is hoping going public will also help find a living donor for her.

Peter said his daughter is in stable condition right now, but that could change at any time.

The donor has to be blood type O-positive. Click here to read more about her family’s campaign, or e-mail HelpDelfina@gmail.com on how you can help.
