TTC investigates after streetcar operator allegedly assaults passenger

The TTC and Toronto police are investigating complaints surfaced online that a passenger was pushed off a streetcar by the operator.

TTC spokesperson Susan Sperling said the allegations surfaced through the social media website Reddit.

“Someone posted on Reddit looking for witnesses to an alleged assault by a TTC operator,” she explained. “(It’s)very upsetting any time there’s a serious allegation against one of our employees.”

The author of the post said the streetcar operator swore at a “clearly intoxicated” man around 8:30 p.m. Friday and then shoved him from behind off the streetcar.

TTC CEO Andy Byford said the driver is off the job pending an investigation.

“Clearly we need to get both sides of the story but at face value it is very concerning,” he said.

Those claiming to be witnesses posted that the incident happened at the Queen Street and Kingston Road stop and it wasn’t because of a fare dispute.

Byford said if onboard video is available, it will be used to determine exactly what happened.

“I’ve already asked my team – does the video still exist?” he said. “We do retain video. If the video is available, it will be looked at.”
