Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives set to announce new leader

The Ontario Progressive Conservative party is set to announce their next leader at a convention in Toronto today.

With more than 76,000 people eligible to vote in ballots cast last Sunday and Thursday, the choice is between Barrie MP Patrick Brown and Whitby MPP Christine Elliott.

While Elliott has been the front runner from the get-go, there is talk Brown could emerge victorious.

One political anaylst says it will depend simply on how many people voted.

Nelson Wiseman, political science professor at the University of Toronto, isn’t so sure about the math involved as turnout figures for the vote haven’t been disclosed.

Wiseman also points out being eligible to vote isn’t difficult.

“These aren’t long-term party members, many of them have never ever been to a party meeting. You don’t have to go to a party meeting, you just have to have membership card and some code and get on the computer and you vote,” Wiseman said. “You never have to meet another Conservative in your life.”
