Mayor of Brampton calls for ombudsman inquiry into city’s affairs

Brampton Mayor Linda Jeffrey is calling on the Ontario ombudsman “to initiate an inquiry” into the city’s affairs.

The call comes after council hired a lawyer to look into the city’s controversial $500-million downtown re-development plan.

The motion put forward by Jeffrey at Monday night’s council meeting called for the ombudsman to look into “potential misconduct in procurement, real estate, planning approvals and any other area.”

The motion received unanimous support from council, and passed 11-0.

It didn’t take long for the ombudsman to respond — in a tweet, André Marin says he would “be happy to… conduct a public inquiry.”
