Thousands take part in annual CN Tower climb

More than 6,000 people climbed to the top of the CN Tower Saturday morning in an effort to preserve wildlife.

The 25th annual World Wildlife Fund (WWF) CN Tower climb kicked off at 6 a.m. There are 1,776 steps to the top.

Money raised will go toward various WWF initiatives, including preserving the habitat of the arctic polar bear.

WWF president and former Toronto mayor David Miller said those taking part are contributing to a better society.

“If you believed in in a world where people live in harmony with nature, it’s a great cause to support and I’m very proud of our work,” said Miller.

For many, the event is an annual tradition.

“Some people have climbed with us for 25 years,” said Miller. “Business and community leaders from across the Toronto region and thousands of people who just really believe in protecting the wonderful places we have in Canada and the wonderful species.”

Last year the event raised about $1-million.
