Woman, 46, dies after car struck by tractor-trailer near Barrie

A 46-year-old woman died after her car was struck by an out-of-control tractor-trailer on Highway 400 near Barrie.

Ontario provincial police say the tractor-trailer was heading north around 2 a.m. on Thursday when it went through the guardrail and into the southbound lanes, hitting a Ford Mustang.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the tractor-trailer lost control, punched through a concrete barrier and rode the guardrail for about 100 metres, striking the Mustang in the process.

There is no word on injuries to the driver of the tractor-trailer.

All lanes of the highway were closed from Mapleview Drive to Highway 89 around 3:30 a.m. and reopened at around 1:45 p.m.

Police said icy roads and snow appeared to have played a role in the crash.

In 2014, there were 11 fatal crashes in the Aurora area on roads the OPP patrols. Nine of those crashes occurred on Highway 400, including one pedestrian. Speed was a factor in all crashes. Two of those deaths happened at Mapleview Drive and one at 11th Concession. These are along the same stretch where Thursday’s crash happened.

There have been two deaths on Highway 400 this year.
