New money from RBC to fund productions at The Old Vic

By The Canadian Press

LONDON – The Old Vic is getting new money from the Royal Bank of Canada.

RBC announced Tuesday that it will become a principal partner in the historic theatre in London, England.

The bank has committed an unspecified amount to sponsoring more than 15 productions at the Old Vic over the next three years.

This is not the first time The Old Vic, which first opened in 1818, has had a Canadian connection.

Toronto businessman and philanthropist Ed Mirvish saved The Old Vic in 1982 and he and his son David Mirvish ran the theatre until 1998.

Matthew Warchus, The Old Vic artistic director designate, says the RBC support will enable it to “continue to plan daring, eclectic and ambitious seasons with more productions than ever before.”

Dave Thomas, the CEO of RBC Capital Markets in Europe, says this three-year partnership builds on the banks commitment to the arts and is a “great opportunity for us to work with the Old Vic at such an exciting time for the theatre.”
