3 people, including child, seriously injured in Jane and Finch fire

Three people, including a child, suffered life-threatening injuries after a three-alarm apartment fire in the city’s west end.

The fire broke out in a second-floor unit of the highrise on Jane Street, near Eddystone Avenue, south of Finch Avenue West, before midnight on Sunday.

Firefighters found a woman and a boy unconscious on the fifth floor in the west stairwell, while an unconscious man was located in the second floor’s west stairwell.

Seven people in total were taken in hospital — four have minor injuries. An elderly woman managed to escape the fire on her own.

Toronto police say the fire started when a candle tipped over in the unit. The smoke traveled quickly because a number of stairwell doors were open, fire officials say.

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

Some residents were treated by firefighters on the scene, with some waiting on their balconies before help arrived.
