1 in 10 Canadians smoked weed last week: Forum poll

Hundreds of people packed Yonge-Dundas Square on Monday calling for an end to marijuana prohibition.

It was the ninth year in a row for the hazy 4:20 protest — and it came on the same day that a Forum Research poll says 1-in-10 people smoked weed in the past week.

The poll was a random sampling of 1,365 Canadians over the age of 18.

It found that eighty-two per cent did not use in the past week and young males (under 35) were the most likely to have lit up. Eight per cent opted out of answering.

The poll also probed the political leanings of both users and abstainers.

“Curiously, unlike most of the social issues we poll, there doesn’t appear to be a strong partisan element in marijuana usage; Conservatives are slightly less likely to claim to have got high in the past week, but a significant minority did,” Lorne Bozinoff, president of Forum Research said.

Results based on the total sample are considered accurate +/- 3%, 19 times out of 20.
