Trifecta of traffic chaos in Toronto starts this weekend

Construction and maintenance closures will likely create traffic chaos in Toronto for the next three weekends.

This weekend, a portion of Allen Road will be closed so that road crews can transport Metrolinx’s tunnel-boring machines and conduct some maintenance work.

Allen, from Lawrence to Eglinton avenues, shuts down starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, and from Sheppard to Eglinton avenues at 11 p.m. The roadway is scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. on Monday.

During the closure, drivers can use Dufferin and Bathurst streets as alternative routes.

But there are more major traffic closures on the horizon.

The Don Valley Parkway will be closed April 24-26, while the Gardiner Expressway if off-limits May 1-3 for spring maintenance, including road paving, clearing catch basins and re-painting pavement markings, among other work.

To ease the pain of congestion, the city will alter timings of traffic signals to ensure smooth traffic flow, and avoid other major work along parallel routes, where possible.

The DVP is expected to reopen in time for the Khalsa Day Parade on April 26, while the Gardiner is scheduled to reopen for the GoodLife Fitness Toronto Marathon on May 3.

Then, on May 31, both the Gardiner and the DVP will shut down for the Becel Ride for Heart.
