Future Shop stores in Canada shut down; 1,500 jobs cut

All Future Shop stores across Canada are closing, Best Buy Canada has confirmed.

Company spokesman Thierry Lopez says 66 Future Shops will close for good, while 65 others will become Best Buy Stores.

Lopez says the converted stores will reopen after a one-week closure.

The move will mean there will be a total of 192 Best Buys in Canada.

Lopez says 500 full-time and 1,000 part-times jobs will lost.

“Any decisions that impact our people are never taken lightly,” Best Buy Canada President Ron Wilson said in a statement.

“I want to express my appreciation to the employees who are leaving, for their contributions to Best Buy Canada.”

Future Shop gift cards will be accepted at any Best Buy store in Canada and at BestBuy.ca.

Existing product orders, service appointments and warranties will continue to be honoured. Goods bought at Future Shop can be returned or exchanged at Best Buy.

Customers with questions can visit the Best Buy website or call 1-866-BEST-BUY (1-866-237-8289).
