EXCLUSIVE: Investigators drafting report into police & security in Ottawa attack

The Ontario Provincial Police investigation into the actions of RCMP and security on Parliament Hill during the Ottawa terror attack is nearing completion.

The investigation, a standard after officer involved shootings, was requested by both the RCMP commissioner and the speaker of the House of Commons.

The investigation will likely shed more light on Michael Zehaf Bibeau’s final gunfight.

Investigators have completed questioning witnesses and examining evidence.

680News Parliament Hill reporter Cormac MacSweeney was there when the gunfire erupted in centre block.

Investigators even returned MacSweeney’s jacket from that day.

He was not wearing the jacket at the time, it was left on the chair he was sitting in just before the shootings.

OPP sergeant Peter Leon said the speaker and the RCMP commissioner have been notified that officers are now drafting the final report.

“An executive summary is being provided to them and the full report will also be provided in the very near future,” Sgt. Leon said.

Sgt. Leon said the findings of this complex investigation will be thorough and detailed but he won’t discuss what they are. The report could answer some lingering questions about the attack, such as whether security and RCMP followed proper protocol, the amount of shots that were fired, how many hit Zehaf Bibeau and who fired the shot that killed him.

OPP said that when the report is done it will be delivered to the speaker and the RCMP commissioner, who will then decide whether to release it publicly.
