Support for the golf course-bound Toronto Maple Leafs may be waning at a furious rate — but according to a recent Forum Research poll, support for a second NHL team in the Big Smoke is strong.
More than 4-in-10 (43 per cent) of the 520 random voters sampled support a second team. That number swells to 62 per cent among NHL fans in the city.
Thirty-nine per cent don’t want another club to boo, and about one-fifth had no opinion.
The poll also found that close to half (45 per cent) of Toronto voters are NHL fans
“Given that Toronto is by far the richest hockey market in the NHL, and that close to one half of Torontonians, who are known as loyal fans to an unrewarding team, would support a second team, including fully two thirds who are already fans, it is a wonder Mr. Bettman is so interested in expanding to desert oases,” said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne Bozinoff.
