Former Toronto Mayor Barbara Hall to chair new panel reviewing TDSB

Education Minister Liz Sandals has announced a seven member panel to work on improving the governance structure at the Toronto District School Board.

It will be led by former Toronto Mayor Barbara Hall and includes former city manager Shirley Hoy.

The establishment of the panel was among the recommendations in Margaret Wilson’s review of the TDSB.

Sandals isn’t looking for public feedback on funding for the school board, but on the trustees and administration. She also indicated that breaking the TDSB into smaller boards is on the table.

“Has the board, in fact, gotten too big to really be effectively managed?” Sandals said.

Hall says the panel’s mandate somewhat precludes any talk about money from the government.

“Our focus is not to go and study the level of funding for the TDSB.”

The panel will hold public consultations between now and May and will report back to Sandals by this summer.

In a release sent to CityNews, TDSB chair Shaun Chen said the they will cooperate with the governance review panel.

“As with all Ministry initiatives, we will work with TDSB stakeholders and communities to ensure that students are at the centre of any decisions. We look forward to working through the consultation process and building public confidence around the positive changes we continue to make,” Chen said.
