TDSB gets passing grade in Fraser Institute elementary school ranking

The Fraser Institute has released its rankings of elementary schools in Ontario, and it finds overall test scores in the province have remained virtually unchanged from last year.

A number of schools in the GTA achieved impressive scores, according to Peter Cowley, director of school performance studies at the institute and co-author of the report.

“Out of those in the GTA that got a 10, five of them are private schools run by religious organizations… there’s five from Toronto District School Board and one from Dufferin-Peel Catholic Board.”

The TDSB received a 6.6 out of 10, which is above the average of all 12 area school boards. In previous years the board was below average.

The report is based on data from annual province-wide test results in literacy and numeracy administered by the Education Quality and Accountability Office.

Cowley said while reading and writing in grades 3 and 6 have made a slow climb, math scores are going the other way.

The data from more than 3,000 schools across the province is available at compareschoolrankings.org.

Cowley encourages parents to check out the findings and compare the data.

“One of the most important comparisons for parents to make is of their school’s most recent results compared to their history – are we improving? Are we staying steady? Are we declining?” he explained. “Parents can become very, very forceful advocates for change if they see their school’s results going down.”
