TCDSB launches inquiry into shooting death of 2 students

Following the October shooting deaths of two teen boys near an Etobicoke high school, the Toronto Catholic District School Board will begin an inquiry into the murders on Tuesday.

Zaid Athir Youssef, 17, and Michael Menjivar, 15, were found with gunshot wounds in an area behind apartment buildings near Islington Avenue and Dixon Road on Oct. 6.

They were Toronto’s 43rd and 44th homicide victims of 2014.

A 17-year-old is facing six charges, including attempted murder and weapons offences.

Youssef was a student at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School while Menjivar attended James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School in North York.

The Catholic school board has scheduled three public meetings for their “Safe Schools Inquiry,” the first of which will be held on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Catholic Education Centre at 80 Sheppard Avenue East.

“Our main goal is to hear from those who were directly impacted by this very serious and tragic incident,” panel chair Paul Crawford said in a release. “If we can come up with additional intervention strategies and insights that assist with further support of vulnerable youth in our community that will be one big positive outcome for all of us.”

The panel is tasked with filing a report with recommendations to the board of trustees in April.
