Environment Canada issued an extreme cold warning for the GTA on Sunday due to the return of “bitterly cold arctic air.”
The wind, combined with possibly record-setting low temperatures, could produce “extreme” wind chills of between -30 and -40 overnight and Monday morning in Toronto and the regions of Halton, Peel, York and Durham.
The actual temperature is forecast to drop to -24 C on Sunday night.
“People planning to be outdoors should dress appropriately and exercise caution as exposed skin may freeze in as little as 10 minutes,” the agency said in a statement.
It said the wind chill will subside somewhat Monday afternoon.
An extreme cold weather alert has been in place in Toronto since Feb. 12, allowing for extra shelter beds and services for the homeless.
