Target offering up to 40% off in liquidation sales at Canadian stores

Target customers who were looking for big liquidation sales at the defunct retailer may finally be getting their wish.

The U.S.-based retailer started its highly-anticipated liquidation sales on Feb. 4 but shoppers were unimpressed by the 10- to 30-per-cent-off deals.

Newspapers ads from Target Canada on Thursday indicate all merchandise will now be cut by an additional 20 to 40 per cent. The sales don’t include Apple products.

The big question is how much merchandise is actually left at Target stores, as shelves are near bare.

It’s likely that merchandise will be shipped down to Target’s U.S. stores, where the company may hope to get a better price.

In January, the retailer announced it would close all 133 of its Canadian stores and lay off more than 17,000 staff, just two years after it began opening stores in Canada.

Target will be shutting down in Canada by May 15.

Some of those reductions have already happened at its Toronto headquarters where the 770-person staff has been reduced to about 80 people.

The company took over old Zellers locations and began to open under the Target banner in Canada for the first time in March 2013, but failed to deliver on customer expectations.
