Extreme cold warning issued for GTA

Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for the GTA, including Toronto and the regions of Halton, Peel, York and Durham.

The temperature is expected to drop to near or below -20 C Wednesday night, which will feel like -30 with the wind overnight and into Thursday morning.

“Little improvement is expected through the day on Thursday, with daytime highs only a few degrees higher than the overnight low temperatures, and winds forecast to become increasingly gusty,” the national forecaster said.

The very cold wind chill will likely continue on Friday and then improve “somewhat” on Saturday.

Extreme cold warnings are announced when frigid temperatures or the wind chill could cause frost bite and hypothermia.

Toronto is also under an extreme cold weather alert, issued last Thursday, and has made extra services available for the homeless.
