Goodbye to snow, for now, but cold weather lingers in GTA

Most of the snow and freezing rain that contributed to a wintery weekend and poor driving conditions in the GTA wraps up on Monday morning, but the cold continues to linger.

On Sunday, the harsh winter weather prompted an extreme cold weather alert in Toronto, which was extended on Monday. Environment Canada also issued a freezing drizzle advisory for Toronto, Hamilton and the GTA, which ended in the evening.

The national forecaster issued a blowing snow advisory for Oakville, Burlington and Hamilton for the overnight, but that has since ended.

Cold temperatures kicked off the work week on Monday. At one point during the morning, the temperature sat at -13 C but it felt like -22 C with the wind.

The rest of the day will be cloudy with some sunny breaks, and a high of -7 C, 680News meteorologist Jill Taylor said. CityNews meteorologist said the high will be -5 C in the afternoon.

Environment Canada is forecasting below-normal temperatures for February, March and April, the weather agency told the Toronto Sun.

Although Tuesday and Wednesday appear to bit milder with lows near -8 C and -9 C, the cold temperatures will kick up a notch on Thursday and Friday with lows near -21 C and -17 C, respectively, without factoring in the wind chill.

While salters have been out on the roads, some areas could still be slick. Police are warning drivers to take it slow, and keep an eye out for slippery patches.

Slippery roads were to blame for a trio of crashes on the Gardiner Expressway, east of Highway 427, on Monday.

Police and tow trucks had to haul the vehicles out of the ditch, causing brief ramp closures from the 427 and Brown’s line to the eastbound Gardiner, which has since been cleared. No serious injuries were reported.

The TTC replaced the 502 Downtowner and 503 Kingston streetcars with buses on Monday due to the weather conditions.

Another winter storm brewing in U.S.

Parts of the U.S. Northeast, including New York state and Boston, is bracing for yet another winter wallop, with up to 60 centimetres of snow expected in some areas.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for parts of New York state and much of the northeastern New England states. The region is getting the brunt of the same system that just grazed Toronto and the GTA.

In Boston, schools and many businesses are already closed, while the transit system is using a heavy-duty blow dryer of sorts to clear the tracks.

Monday’s storm comes on the heels of major snowfalls for the U.S. Northeast over the past two weeks, the most recent one on Sunday.

Anyone flying in and out of the area are asked to check with their airline before heading to the airport, as cancellations are already in effect and expected to mount as the snow continues to fall.

In Toronto, more than 100 flights have been cancelled at Pearson International Airport on Monday, mostly to the U.S. Northeast, Ottawa and Montreal. There are also flight delays to the West Coast, Vancouver and Edmonton. Click here to check your flight status.
