Toronto under 8th extreme cold weather alert of the year

Bitterly cold temperatures are once again set to grip Toronto, as the city is under another extreme weather alert.

This is the city’s eighth alert, covering 11 days in January so far.

The alert was issued by the city’s medical officer of health Dr. David McKeown on Friday. It will be in effect until further notice.

An alert is issued when temperatures are set to reach -15 C or colder according to Environment Canada’s forecast.

Temperatures are expected to fall throughout the day to -12 C with a wind chill near -23 by Friday afternoon.

The low will be near -18 C by nightfall, but it will feel like -28 with the wind, 680News meteorologist Jill Taylor said.

The first extreme cold weather alert of the year was issued on Jan. 7, with the most recent one on Tuesday. It was lifted the following day.

During extreme cold weather alerts, extra services are available to the homeless, including two 24-hour drop-ins and extra shelter beds.
