Uber drivers fume after company doubles their fees

Uber drivers in Toronto were steaming on Wednesday after learning that the company was doubling their fees — meaning they will now have to hand over 20 per cent of each metered fare.

“They’re getting rich and they just end up playing with us. It sucks,” said driver Arif Ahsan. “We don’t make that much money.”

In a statement to CityNews, Uber said: “Our fee increase is a necessary step to help ensure the long-term sustainability of our taxi product offering in Toronto.”

The company appears poised for growth in Toronto.

On Tuesday the company sent out an email to customers, advertising job opportunities.

“I think a lot of people recognize that (the taxi industry) is ripe for innovation,” said Dr. Chris MacDonald, Ted Rogers School of Management.

“Uber seems to have found a really key innovation and is showing signs of being a really revolutionary move in the industry.”

The City of Toronto has laid 36 bylaw charges against Uber since 2012, when the company began its Toronto operations, and is seeking a court injunction to halt its operations in Toronto.

The city’s injunction application cites five Uber services — UberTaxi, UberBlack, UberSUV, UberX and UberXLcease.
