Samsung still interested in buying BlackBerry: report

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is still interested in taking over or buying a significant stake in BlackBerry Ltd., despite denials by both companies a week ago, according to a media report.

The Financial Post reported Wednesday it has obtained a document prepared for Samsung by New York-based investment bank Evercore Partners that outlines the case for and the potential structure of a possible BlackBerry acquisition.

The two companies declined to comment, the Post said.

On Jan. 14, BlackBerry responded to a 30-per-cent jump in its stock price, saying that it has not engaged in discussions with Samsung about a possible takeover.

The response followed a report from Reuters news agency which said Samsung had met with BlackBerry executives over the possibility of buying the Canadian company for as much as US$7.5 billion.

The news agency cited both a source familiar with the proposal and related documents.
