A 680News listener says she spotted a “sun dog” in Mount Albert in York Region on Wednesday morning.

Belinda Hosey, from Mount Albert, said she’s seen sun dogs in the Arctic, but never seen one in the Greater Toronto Area.

A sun dog is a phenomenon that makes it appear that there are three suns, and it’s a natural result of the cold.

680News meteorologist Jill Taylor said the weather were perfect for a sun dog on Wednesday, with cold temperatures and hazy conditions.

“Sometimes, these sun dogs are called false suns — bright spots on either side of the sun, sometimes with a halo. They can be seen really any time of the year, anywhere as well in the world,” Taylor said.

“But for us, with the cold and the ice crystals that we had in the atmosphere this morning, some were viewed in parts of the GTA. They could even be seen later today when the sun is lower in the horizon.
