Christmas by the numbers

More than two-thirds of Canadians say they’re Christian, according to a survey by Statistics Canada.

So the holy day is one that’s celebrated in many homes and communities across the country and around the world.

Below is a by the numbers look at what it takes to mark the holiday in this country.

  • 1,574,847 fresh-cut Christmas trees were exported from Canada to the rest of the world in 2013.
  • $55 million worth of artificial Christmas trees were imported to Canada from China in 2013, up from $48.5 million in 2012.
  • 21.5-million turkeys were produced in Canada in 2013.
  • 11.4-million Poinsettia indoor potted plants and cuttings were produced in greenhouses in Canada in 2013.
  • 33 per cent of Canadian households reported using LED holiday lights in 2011, up from 29 per cent in 2007.
  • $450.9 million worth of candy, confectionery and snack foods were sold monthly at large retailers in December 2013, the month with the highest sales.
  • 5.6-million litres of eggnog were sold commercially in Canada in December 2013.
  • 267 farms produce cranberries in Canada. According to the agriculture census, this activity is concentrated in Quebec and British Columbia.
  • $36.4 million worth of exercise and fitness equipment were sold in Canada in January 2014.
