North York seniors say they were scammed by snow plow company

Last week’s storm kept everyone in the GTA busy digging out, but some seniors are demanding answers after they say they never received snow removal services they paid for.

Rita Ambrosino says she and three other neighbours paid $400 each to a company called Snow Easy Plowing on Nov. 15 and in exchange the company was supposed clear their driveways after a snowfall of more than two centimetres.

“They seemed like really nice people,” the 79-year-old North York resident said.

Rita’s son Gary Ambrosino said when the neighbours met with the company representative things seemed to be in order.

“The contract looked legitimate, everything looked legitimate,” he said. “Because it was late in the season he (said he) needed the money all up front instead of two payments.”

But when major snow hit Toronto last Thursday, the Ambrosinos say the company was a no show.

“I tried to call the whole next day (with) no answer,” Gary Ambrosino said. “I tried emailing them, no answer.”

Ambrosino also found a discrepancy regarding the address of the business. On the contract, the company’s address is stated as Shale Gate in Toronto, but through the Yellow Pages online, it shows an address of Baskerville Run Road in Mississauga – which is a residential home.

The homeowner at the Baskerville Run address said two people have come to his home in the past looking for the Snow Easy company, but he said that he has nothing to do with the company.

“I have clearly told them that I don’t have anything to do with it,” the homeowner, who did not want to be identified, told CityNews. “I will go to the police station and report this.”

The address on Shale Gate also featured a different company name on the front of the building.

CityNews called and emailed Snow Easy Plowing numerous times over the weekend for a statement, but so far no one has responded.

Police say the number one rule in these type of situations is to never give all the money up front and to call them if you suspect any wrongdoing.
