Mississauga, Brampton to hold education sessions on coyote safety

With multiple reports of “unusual coyote activity” across the Greater Toronto Area this fall, the cities of Mississauga and Brampton are trying to keep the peace between man and beast.

At least four dogs in Mississauga and two humans in Brampton have been attacked in recent weeks.

Brampton Animal Services is hosting a free education session for residents on Monday night at 7 p.m. in city hall’s council chambers.

The executive director of Coyote Watch Canada will be there to answer questions about coyote behaviour and how to avoid conflicts.

For those who cannot attend Monday’s session, animal services will hold more sessions in the near future.

Mississauga is also hosting three open houses during the first week of December to educate people on urban coyotes and how to co-exist.

Below is a list of the meeting locations, dates and times in Mississauga:

Dec. 1

  • River Grove Community Centre (5800 River Grove Ave.), 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Dec. 2

  • Central Library’s Noel Ryan Auditorium (301 Burnhamthorpe Rd. W.), 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Dec. 3

  • Lorne Park Library, 1474 Truscott Dr., 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The City of Brampton recently hung signs alerting residents to a family of coyotes living in a ravine near Steeles Avenue and Mississauga Road.

Authorities say anyone who spots a coyote sniffing around homes or buildings to report it by calling 311.
