Sunrise Records preparing to close 2 Yonge locations by mid-November

After almost 30 years on Yonge Street, Sunrise Records is in the process of closing two of its locations on the famed Toronto strip.

The flagship store at 336 Yonge St., near Dundas Street East, and its nearby location 784 Yonge St. at Bloor Street West, are closing since their leases have expired.

Inventory has already been marked down, with signs saying, “store closing sale — everything must go.”

Sunrise also mentioned its store closings on its Facebook page, with one post saying, “Come say hi, share your memories. We love you all!”

Earlier this month, blogTO reported the stores are slated to close on Nov. 15.

The record store cites rising rent costs and the lack of CD and vinyl sales — attributed to a changing music industry — as reasons for the closures, according to a report in Exclaim.ca

Sunrise opened its first location in 1986 at 336 Yonge St., and then expanded to a number of malls across Ontario, including at Yonge and Bloor.

And though the mall stores have been shuttered as their leases expired, a deal trying to re-open and revitalize some of these locations is currently in the works. These will be under new ownership staffed by some seasoned Sunrise management.
