Drivers make dangerous choices, turning around on Hwy. 401 to avoid traffic

A video submitted by a CityNews viewer shows some motorists making dangerous driving choices as they back up their vehicles, turn around and go the wrong way on the westbound Highway 401, near McCowan Road, to avoid a traffic jam on Saturday morning.

Gina Bissember took the video between 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., said police pulled over three drivers, but many more continued to drive the wrong way.

“I was just a little shocked that they would physically turn around,” she said. “Some stayed on shoulders and others didn’t (and) that’s what shocked me the most, is when they just physically turned around and said ‘oh I don’t care.’

“That was like ‘wow, I can’t believe you’ve actually done that.'”

At the time, the westbound express lanes were closed from west of McCowan to Warden Avenue for construction. Also, one collector lane was closed west of Kennedy Road due to a crash. This led to slowdowns on the collector lanes.

The roadway has since reopened to traffic.

Many people took to social media to call out the drivers for their dangerous maneuver:
