Maple Leaf Square will be renamed Ford Square

Maple Leaf Square, the gathering place for sports fans and music goers outside the Air Canada Centre (ACC), will be renamed Ford Square as part of a “multi-year” sponsorship deal with the car company.

Ford has sponsored the Toronto Raptors for 20 years, and the Maple Leafs and ACC for 15.

The renaming is part of Ford’s sponsorship deal extension with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which owns the teams and the stadium.

As part of the deal renewal, Ford will give away 200 Leafs tickets for every game, with most of the seats located in a Ford-branded section in the 600 level called the “Ford Fan Deck.” Those tickets will be available to minor hockey teams and community associations.

The new name will be announced on signs and flags in the square.

The move comes as MLSE expands its use of the square.

During the Raptors playoff run it was nicknamed Jurassic Park and hosted large viewing parties with bleachers and big screens.

And the Maple Leafs are building a statue featuring legendary players in commemoration of the team’s 100-year anniversary in the 2016-2017 season.

Will you call the square by its new name? Tell us in comments!
