EXCLUSIVE: Richmond Hill man’s car torched a year after house fire

A year after narrowly escaping a house fire, another blaze on the same property has a Richmond Hill man in disbelief.

Steve Gyimesy’s car was broken into and set on fire on Sunday morning, about a one year after his home was gutted and his lungs burned in a fire that almost took his life.

In that September 2013 fire, the 71-year-old was rescued by two teenage brothers.

This time around, numerous explosions from the car startled neighbours, who ran over and began banging on his door.

“The car was in flames and there were several explosions… at least 15 to 20 small explosions,”  Awen, a neighbour, told CityNews.

Gyimesy’s home has been under construction for several months and had brand new windows installed just weeks ago. Now those new windows are cracked from the extreme heat coming off the burning car.

“I’m ready to break down. I really am,” Gyimesy told CityNews. “Nobody can go through this much (stuff)…I’m not even finished with (rebuilding the house).”

CityNews has learned a 42-year-old man is now facing charges of mischief and theft. Police say they recovered a laptop bag that was stolen from Gyimesy’s car.
