Derailment disrupts GO train service on Barrie, Richmond Hill lines

A minor CN train derailment south of York University on Wednesday morning caused delays for several hours on the Barrie and Richmond Hill GO train lines.

Barrie trains were being forced to detour on the Richmond Hill line, which caused a 20-minute delay for Richmond Hill passengers.

As of 1:30 p.m., GO Transit said “the repair work is ongoing,” but that it expects regular afternoon service to resume on the Barrie line with delays of up to 10 minutes. Trains would have to travel through the area at reduced speeds.

GO Transit expects service to resume on its Richmond Hill line on Wednesday afternoon, and that trains on the Barrie line will not be detoured on the Richmond Hill line.

At one point during the morning commute, the detour caused delays of about 40 to 50 minutes on the Barrie line.

Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins said affected GO train riders will be able to get refunds.

“Normally, because this isn’t something that is GO Transit’s fault, but we’re going to cover it for service guarantee, so they’ll be able to get refunds,” Aikins said.

After Barrie trains left Rutherford station, they were detoured onto the Richmond Hill line.

There will be no train service to York University GO on Wednesday. Shuttle buses will be running from Rutherford to York University.

Passengers can also use their GO tickets to board the TTC at staffed entrances to Downsview station.
