Sarah Thomson apologizing for late-night mayoral campaign robocalls

Potential voters did not think mayoral hopeful Sarah Thomson’s campaign tactics were off the hook Thursday night.

Many – including Thomson herself — were awoken after midnight by an automated message inviting voters to a meet and greet at a Starbucks in the Bloor Street West and Yonge Street area on Sunday morning.

“I’m feeling sick about it,” Thomson said.

“I too got woken up, me and my kids. I was thinking it was my elderly mother.”

The automated phone calls went out between midnight and 1:30 a.m. She said the calls were supposed to go out between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., but a computer glitch pushed them back five hours.

Thomson tweeted an apology around 1:30 a.m., saying she had called the company to halt the calls.

She does not know what caused the glitch.

Thomson is spending Friday fielding calls from angry residents and trying to personally apologize to everyone affected.

Thomson said she still plans to host the meet and greet.

“I’m offering to buy everyone a soothing cup of tea.”
