Bearded dragons, raccoon among pets seized in Oshawa home

Police have charged a 24-year-old Oshawa man they say abandoned almost three dozen animals, including bearded dragons and a raccoon, in his home.

Neighbours had been feeding one of the man’s dogs, which had been left outside his townhouse, but became concerned and called police when they heard two more dogs inside.

Officers went into the home and were “overwhelmed by the offensive smell inside.”

The owner wasn’t there, but police found two dogs in distress and a raccoon running free. They also seized an iguana, a caiman, two bearded dragons, 19 turtles — including red-eared sliders — a frog and a tarantula, which they said were properly contained.

On Thursday, police arrested Jake Sheffield and charged him with four counts of failing to provide reasonable care for animal.

He was released with conditions.

The OSPCA has assigned an investigator to the case.
