Peel police launch probe into anti-immigration flyers in Brampton

Peel police have launched an investigation into a flyer targeting immigrants and Sikhs in Brampton and said hate crime charges could result.

The flyer — distributed recently to a small number of residents in a Brampton neighbourhood — says, “Stop the Madness,” and asks Brampton residents to “Say no to the massive third world invasion of Canada.”

It shows the face of a Sikh covered by a “prohibited” symbol and says immigration is to blame for lowered wages, increased poverty and unemployment and reducing whites to a minority in their own country.

“Peel Regional Police have become aware of the most recent flyer that is now in circulation in our region depicting insensitive and racially intolerant messaging,” police said in a statement.

“[We] strongly oppose this type of messaging and we remain committed to identifying a possible hate crime.”

In April, Vancouver-based Immigration Watch Canada handed out a similar flyer in Brampton with pictures of Sikhs and the caption, “Is this what you really want?”

The group’s name appears at the bottom of the latest circular, but it denies playing a role.

If warranted, police said they will get permission from the Ministry of the Attorney General to lay hate crime charges.
