Man charged in alleged Hwy. 400 hit-and-run released on bail

A 40-year-old Bradford man charged in connection with an alleged fatal hit-and-run on Highway 400 in Vaughan on Thursday has been released on bail.

Police said the victim, Chandrowtie Basdeo, 82, from Vaughan, who suffers from Alzheimer’s had wandered into the right southbound lane, south of King Road, on foot when she was clipped by a passing vehicle.

The driver, now identified by Ontario provincial police as Joey Pellegrino, did not remain on the scene. However, he turned himself in to police late afternoon.

Ontario provincial police said his vehicle, a 2010 Ford Escape, was seized.

Pellegrino is charged with failing to stop at a scene of a motor vehicle collision involving death. His next court appearance is set for Sept. 11 in Newmarket.

According to family members, Chandrowtie had wandered away from home before. When they noticed she was missing, they began searching. She apparently walked seven kilometres between her home and the 400.
