King Street West between Brant and Portland streets has been reopened after being shut down due to a natural gas leak on Wednesday.

The district fire chief said a backhoe operator hit a gas line while working at the site of a new Keg restaurant under construction at 560 King St. W. (between Brant and Portland streets), around 1 p.m.

The building and some others in the area were evacuated as an Enbridge crew worked on containing the leak.

People in the area reported smelling a strong odour.
