Mayor Ford calls Blair’s severance package ‘a little too rich’

Mayor Rob Ford called outgoing Chief Bill Blair’s severance “a little too rich,” after learning that Toronto’s top cop will pocket a full year’s salary plus benefits when he departs in April 2015.

According to the Toronto Sun, Blair will pocket $367,719, plus $3,006 in benefits when his contract with the Toronto Police Services Board expires.

“I personally wouldn’t have voted for that,” Ford said while touring an electronics recycling plant in Scarborough Wednesday. “But that’s not under my administration.

“It’s unfortunate,” he added. “That’s pretty steep to take home $350,000 plus (benefits). The average person does not get that when they retire…I want to wish the chief the best, but that’s a little too rich for my liking.”

The police board informed Blair last week that it would not be renewing his contract.

Blair, 60, has been chief since April 2005, and has been a police officer for 39 years.
