John Tory leads in voter support in conservative poll

A new poll has John Tory in the lead in the Toronto mayoral race.

According to the survey, conducted by conservative pollster Dimitri Pantazopoulos in partnership with Maple Leaf Strategies, Tory has 30 per cent of voter support.

Chow has 26 per cent of voter support, followed by Ford at 23 per cent. David Soknacki and Coun. Karen Stintz round out the top five at three per cent.

The poll results were published on Toronto Star’s website on Thursday.

Pantazopolous, who has past ties with both Ford and Tory told the Star, it’s unlikely Ford will be able to rise to the 30 per cent range of support he believes is needed to win the race.

He said “Ford Nation” has turned to “Ford Stagnation.”

The poll also shows Mayor Ford is trailing Chow and Tory in all areas of the city with the exception of Scarborough. In that area, the mayor has 35 per cent of support, while Tory follows with 22 per cent and Chow has 20 per cent.

The telephone survey of 800 Torontonians was done between July 28-30. The results are within a 3.5 per cent margin of error, 19 times out of 20.

A recent Forum Research poll conducted in July showed Tory, Chow and Ford in a statistical tie for voter support. Chow was in the lead with 29 per cent, followed by Tory at 28 per cent and Mayor Ford in third with 27 per cent.

The Toronto municipal election is on Oct. 27.
