Marriage, power and sex rule season 2 of CW’s ‘Reign’ as Mary and Francis are newlyweds

By The Associated Press

SAN DIEGO – When The CW’s “Reign” returns for its second season, we will see Mary, Queen of Scots, and the new King, Francis II, in the first year of marriage.

Don’t expect it to be all wedded bliss and festivities at court.

The young couple has to contend with their newfound position of power, not to mention as newlyweds.

“Reign” stars Adelaide Kane, Toby Regbo and Megan Follows talked about the show and teased season two at a Comic-Con panel Thursday.

Some highlights of what to expect:

— The plague is coming. Executive Producer Laurie McCarthy says it “changes the dynamics of court, this particular region of France” and “not everyone will survive.” There will be casualty in the first episode.

— In real life, King Francis II didn’t live past 40. The clock is now slowing down on the show. “I’m in no rush to say goodbye to Toby or to Francis,” McCarthy said.

— Season one’s love triangle between Francis, Mary and his fictional half brother Sebastian is over. Francis and Mary are married, and Bash, as he’s known, has moved on. Kane, for one, is happy about that. “I’m really glad we didn’t continue,” she said. “It’s tired, and it’s exhausting, and I’m sick of seeing it. … You can only do that for so long before it gets bloody boring.”

— New characters are expected. Under this new reign of power, McCarthy said, “a lot of nobles have been waiting for their day in court and their moment to get involved with people like Catherine de Medici, Mary and Francis.”

— Mary will feel pressure to produce an heir, especially because Francis has a love child with another woman at court (a friend of Mary’s.)

Comic-Con is a four-day festival celebrating film, TV, video games, comic books, costumes and other popular art that continues through Sunday at the San Diego Convention Center.
