Renters now have the power to help the environment with the simple act of choosing a certified green apartment building.
A new voluntary program run by the Federation of Rental-housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO) now evaluates whether buildings meet the new measuring stick for environmental operating standards.
So far, 365 or about a third of Toronto’s apartment towers are registered with the Certified Rental Building Program (CRBP).
“It’s a guarantee,” said Ted Whitehead of the CRBP.
“It’s like the Good Housekeeping seal of approval. I always say, ‘Why would you rent anywhere but a certified rental building?’”
Over the next few months 950 apartments — housing about 225,000 people — in Ontario will be part of the program.
