SlutWalk 2014 marches through downtown

Toronto’s SlutWalk, which started three years ago as a response to victim-blaming in sexual assaults, marched through the city on Saturday afternoon, beginning at Nathan Phillips Square.

According to the group’s website, the “collective action against victim-blaming in support of survivors of sexual violence” headed north on University Avenue to Queen’s Park, where speakers addressed the crowd.

Included in that group was Cheri DiNovo, the NDP MPP for Parkdale-High Park whose 2012 “Toby’s Act” amended the Ontario Human Rights Code to include gender identity and gender expression.

SlutWalk began in 2011, as a response to a Toronto police officer’s comment that women should “avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.”

Const. Michael Sanguinetti’s talk about sexual assault to Osgoode Hall Law School students angered many and prompted a group of women to plan the march. The Toronto Police Service condemned Sanguinetti’s comments and apologized to the students in the audience.

Similar marches have taken place across the country and around the world.
