Halton police are warning people of a new phone scam that victimized a Burlington couple.
The couple said a man called to tell them their Visa had been compromised.
Since their caller ID displayed “VISA,” followed by a 989 area code, the couple assumed the call was legitimate and gave the man all the personal information he asked for.
When they followed up on the call by contacting their financial institutions, the couple found out there had been no fraudulent activity on their Visa, but their MasterCard showed an attempted fraud for several hundreds of dollars.
The couple has since cancelled both credit cards.
Police are advising the public to never provide personal information when solicited from an unknown caller and to follow up with financial institutions directly.
