‘Mummy bandit’ faces 36 charges in Toronto bank robberies

A man dubbed the “mummy bandit” faces 36 charges relating to 16 bank robberies in Toronto including 10 in downtown.

The man is accused of hold-ups that occurred between Aug. 2, 2012, and June 20.

Police called him the “mummy bandit,” the “Joker bandit” and the “thriller bandit” because he either wore makeup or a mask during some of the robberies, but more recent surveillance pictures showed his face uncovered.

At first he would pass notes to the tellers but he increasingly became more violent, police say.

In a King Street robbery, it’s alleged he was armed with a gun and also held a knife to an employee’s throat as he demanded cash.

Brandon Smith appeared at the Old City Hall courthouse on Friday.

He was charged with 10 counts of robbery with a firearm, six counts of robbery, two counts of assault with a weapon, nine counts of weapons dangerous and nine counts of disguise with intent.

Smith is scheduled to appear in court again on July 11.
