Olympian ends cross-Canada mental health ride on Parliament Hill

OTTAWA – The Canadian Olympian who’s been cycling across Canada to raise mental health awareness has ended her ride with a triumphant Canada Day finish on Parliament Hill.
Clara Hughes was greeted with cheers as she cycled onto Parliament Hill amid Canada Day festivities.
Hughes, an Olympic cyclist and speed skater, has cycled more than 11,000 kilometres, passing through all 10 provinces and three territories since she kicked off her ride almost four months ago. Throughout the journey, she has discussed her past battles with depression.
In a statement, Hughes thanked the Canadians along the way who encouraged and supported her efforts to advocate for a country “where those who struggle aren’t afraid to ask for help.”
Hughes was slated to head to Rideau Hall later today to be greeted by Gov. Gen. David Johnston.
The 41-year-old Hughes has won six Olympic medals in both cycling and speed skating, tying her with speed skater Cindy Klassen as the Canadian with the biggest haul.
