Covered walkway saves man from falling construction equipment

A pedestrian was lucky to escape unharmed when construction equipment fell about six storeys and broke through a covered walkway right above his head in downtown Toronto.

Just before noon on Friday, the man was walking next to a condo construction site at Dundas and Jarvis streets, when a foot jack fell onto the walkway. It cracked the wood covering above a streetcar stop where people were waiting.

A worker with the contractor, Tucker HiRiseConstruction, said the equipment weighed about 25 pounds. He said an investigation is underway.

The high-rise building, called Pace, is slated to be complete in Spring 2015, according to developer Great Gulf.
