2nd tornado touched down Tuesday near New Tecumseth

Environment Canada confirms a second EF-1 tornado touched down Tuesday north of Orangeville.

Peter Kimbell with Environment Canada tells CityNews the tornado was within the same system as the storm in New Tecumseth.

The tornado touched down around 3:30 p.m. in Laurel and caused damage to a home. It had a seven kilometre long track and was about 115 metres wide, Kimbell said.

Another tornado of a similar velocity was confirmed to have touched down in New Tecumseth around the same time.

Environment Canada said its survey teams rated the tornado EF-1 with maximum winds between 135 and 175 km/h.

No injuries were reported.

The New Tecumseth tornado was spawned from a cluster of severe thunderstorms that snaked across southern Ontario on Tuesday.

Some roads in the area were closed due to the severe weather and residents were asked to keep an eye out for downed trees and hydro wires.

The tornadoes come a week after an EF-2 tornado struck nearby Angus, injuring three people and damaging more than 100 homes.

The weather agency said this was the sixth tornado of the season.
