EF1 tornado touched down in New Tecumseth: Environment Canada

Environment Canada confirms that an EF1 tornado touched down Tuesday in New Tecumseth, west of Bradford Ont.

The agency says its survey teams have rated the tornado as an EF-1 with maximum winds between 135 and 175 kilometres per hour. Environment Canada says a further investigation will be conducted Wednesday in the area about 50 kilometres north of Toronto.

There have been no reported injuries.

A couple driving near Tottenham in New Tecumseth recorded footage of what appears to be a tornado. Jordan Brewer and Kelly Dove say the video was filmed on 15th Side Road between the 3rd and 4th lines.

The New Tecumseth tornado was spawned from a cluster of severe thunderstorms that snaked across southern Ontario Tuesday.

Some roads in the area were closed due to the severe weather and residents were asked to keep an eye out for downed trees and hydro wires.

This tornado comes a week after an EF-2 tornado struck nearby Angus, injuring three people and damaging more than 100 homes.

In Hawkesbury, the local fire department said it had not received any calls for assistance from residents in connection with a possible tornado.
Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm warnings for areas north of Toronto, including Barrie, Collingwood, Newmarket, Orillia and Uxbridge. Those warnings have since been downgraded to watches.

Provincial police confirmed that heavy wind and rain hit Amaranth Township, located in Dufferin Country, causing damage to houses, trees and downed power lines.

Parts of Barrie also experienced localized flooding.
