‘Bionic Pancreas’ major step forward in treatment of diabetes

Researchers have developed a so-called bionic pancreas, what they’re calling  a major step forward in the treatment of type -1 diabetes.

Boston University and Massachusetts General Hospital have developed a device that constantly monitors blood sugar and automatically gives insulin or a sugar-boosting drug as needed.

Doctors say the wearable, experimental device – made up of an iPhone and a glucose monitor — has passed a real-world test with a larger study set to begin Monday.

They say it well help free people with diabetes from the daily ordeal of managing their condition.

The findings appear in the New England Journal of Medicine.

There are nine-million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes, according to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
