The express lanes of the eastbound Gardiner Expressway have reopened west of Islington Avenue following an earlier crash.

All traffic was being forced onto the collector lanes at Kipling Avenue.

The closure lasted several hours until about 3 p.m. on Thursday.

It appears a tractor-trailer hauling metal beams stopped in one of the express lanes, and a cube van then ran into the rig around 8:30 a.m. A steel girder penetrated the cab portion of van.

The 47-year-old male driver of the cube van was extricated from his vehicle and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries to his lower body.
